هذه هي البداية فقط. وكما يوحي اسمها، فإن ال functional programming تتمحور حول نظرية ال functions.
سيكون من المنطقي أن تكون قادرًا على تمريرها كـ arguments ل functions أخرى ، وإرجاع function من function أخر. تعتبر الدوال first class objects في جافا سكريبت، مما يعني أنه يمكن استخدامها مثل أي object آخر. يمكن حفظها في المتغيرات، أو تخزينها في object ما، أو تمريرها كـ function arguments.
دعونا نبدأ ببعض الـ array functions البسيطة، التي هي methods على ال array object prototype. في هذا التمرين نحن ننظر إلى Array.prototype.map()أو ببساطة map.
تتكرر طريقة map علي كل عنصر في array وتُرجع array جديدة تحتوي على نتائج استدعاء الـ callback function على كل عنصر. وهو يقوم بذلك دون تغيير في الـ array الأصلية.
عند استخدام الـ callback، يتم تمرير ثلاثة arguments. وال argument الأولى هي العنصر الحالي الذي تجري معالجته. والثاني هو فهرس ذلك العنصر والثالث هو ال array التي تم على أساسها استدعاء map.
انظر أدناه للحصول على مثال باستخدام map على users لإرجاع array جديدة تحتوي فقط على اسماء المستخدمين كعناصر. ومن أجل البساطة، لا يستخدم المثال سوى ال argument الأولى للـ callback.

يحتوي المتغير watchList على مجموعة من ال objects التي تحتوي على معلومات عن عدة أفلام. استخدم map على watchList لتعيين array جديدة من ال objects إلى متغير ratings. يجب أن يكون لكل فيلم في ال array الجديدة key الـ title فقط باسم الفيلم، و key الـ rating مع تقييم IMDB. الكود في المحرر يستخدم حاليا حلقة for للقيام بذلك، لذا يجب أن تستبدل loop functionality بتعبير map الخاص بك.
